Gold Cup - Mexico Defeated Guadeloupe without Suspended Coach Aguirre
The current first place of the Group C of the Gold Cup, Mexico, defeated Guadeloupe 2-0 this past Sunday despite not having its Coach Javier Aguirre due to suspension.
Aguirre started a fight during the match against Panama and was close to miss a World Cup qualifier game against the United States. However, the CONCACAF committee decided instead to give a $25,000 fine to the Mexico team with and penalize Aguirre with a three-game suspension due to his negligent behavior. So, during this game, Aguirre had to watch the game from the stands.
Since the beginning of the game, Mexico entered with a lot of motivation and excitement, getting the first chances to open the score in hands of Omar Bravo at the 11th minute and then with a long-range shot from by Carlos Esquivel, but both attempts went out. Later the goalkeeper of Guadeloupe had his best save of the first half at minute 36th when Giovanni Dos Santos made a very dangerous free kick and he managed to catch it in a great way.
However, regardless of all the saves that goalkeeper Fausta did, Mexico finally opened the score at minute 41st, after Gerardo Torrado gathered an assist from Efrain Juarez in the top of the penalty area, and he kicked with his right foot to place the ball deep in the arc, putting the score 1-0 at half time.
During the second part, Guadeloupe came in with more energy, having some opportunities to tie the game at minute 69. However, Mexico regained the control of the actions a few minutes later. After some actions between the two teams, two players of Guadeloupe were send out; Alain Vertot drew his second yellow card after pulling down a Mexican player, and subsequently Ludovic Gotin obtained a straight red after a risky tackle.
After these incidents, Mexico controlled easier the game and at minute 85 Miguel Sabah headed a pass from Pablo Barrera to end the game with a 2-0 in favor of the Tri. With this victory, Mexico is classifying in the first place of Group C with two victories and a draw overall and is currently the favorite to win the Gold Cup.
Despite that Coach Aguirre could had to be a spectator for this game and said that it was hard for him to be away from his players, he also said he was really satisfied with his team and the way they performed the game plan exposed.
"It was very tough, but I had to deal with it I was penalized, but I really believe in my team. It was definitely tough, but it gave me a lot of perspective watching from up there. We qualified and we feel good. We seemed lighter on our feet and more confident. I hope that we stay that way," said Aguirre.
Now with their classification to the quarterfinals, Mexico will face Haiti on July 19th at Arligton, Texas, whereas Guadeloupe will face Costa Rica on the same day at the same venue.
