How to Ride a Bike - Coaching Your Little One
If your child could have any superpower, they are most likely to choose flight. Every child dreams of the ability to glide through the sky, and while riding a bike is not flight it is the closest thing to soaring. Teaching your child how to ride is not only empowering but also beneficial. Learning how to ride a bike opens up a world of adventure outdoors, and with careful precautions one can easily avoid the common dangers associated.
Ready
Most children learn to ride between the ages of three and six. However, each child is unique both physically and mentally. Use your own judgment to determine whether or not your child is physically and mentally ready to learn this skill. Once one determines that the child is ready, prepare for the joy of discovery and learning. Some children can learn this skill in a single afternoon, whereas the majority of children take longer. Most importantly remember that the child must have fun during the learning process to enjoy the skill. Without fun the skill will be pointless as well as stressful for the child.
Set: Obtaining the proper equipment and bike
As a parent or guardian, one must provide the proper equipment for the child to learn. To ride effectively and foremost safely one will need to obtain;
€ Specialized bike
€ Properly fitting helmet
€ Additional safety guards
€ Training wheels
Kids bikes come in many shapes, sizes, and colors. The first characteristic to note when choosing a kids bike is size. Your child should be able to stand with both feet touching the ground when straddling the bicycle. If your child needs an elevated surface to get on the seat the bike is too large. Ensuring the proper size is essential for controlling the bicycle while riding. If the bicycle is too large, your child is more likely to lose control and become injured.
A second characteristic to observe is function. There are many varieties of specialized kids bikes on the market. Choose one that fits your child's age and ability. Several specialized kids bikes styles include but are not limited to:
€ Tricycles
€ Bicycles with training wheels
€ Two wheel bike
€ Pewi Walking Buddy for toddlers
€ Balancing bikes that teach a child to balance without pedals
€ Bikes on a pole
A bicycle helmet is also mandatory to avoid serious injury. According to the National Injury Prevention Foundation,€helmets can prevent an estimated 75% of bicycle fatalities among children.€ Statistically, 85-88% of critical head and brain injuries can be prevent through the proper use of a bicycle helmet! Once your child is set up with the proper kids bike and safety equipment, you must find a perfect location to teach the skill to your child. Look for a traffic free, flat location that is evenly paved and spacious. Often private driveways make an excellent location as well as an empty basketball court.
