DIY Yoga Mat Cleaning Spray



After a class of hot Bikram Yoga chances are your yoga mat is not smelling so fresh anymore. Thankfully there is an easy way to remove the odor and germs from your mat so that you next class you are not doing downward facing dog with your faces right up against your foul smelling mat. All you need is some tea tree oil, water, and a spray bottle to make your own yoga mat cleaning spray that will keep your yoga mat smelling nice and clean.

What You Will Need (Mild Cleaner):
  • 10 drops of tea tree oil
  • 1 small spray bottle
  • distilled water
  • funnel

How To Make A Mild Yoga Mat Cleaning Spray:
  1. Fill your spray bottle with distilled water using a funnel.
  2. Add 10 drops of tea tree oil which has antibacterial properties.
  3. Tightly screw on the spray bottle top and shake the mixture.
  4. Spray your yoga mat with your new cleaning spray and air dry before use.

What You Will Need (Strong Cleaner):
  • 10 drops of tea tree oil
  • 1 small spray bottle
  • distilled water
  • 5 drops of your favorite relaxing essential oil (such as eucalyptus, lemongrass, peppermint or lavender)
  • vinegar or witch hazel

How To Make A Strong Yoga Mat Cleaning Spray:
  1. Fill your spray bottle using a funnel with 3 parts distilled water 1 part vinegar or witch hazel that will help to fight bacteria. As vinegar has a much stronger scent when it is sprayed then witch hazel consider using witch hazel instead.
  2. Add 10 drops of tea tree oil which has antibacterial properties.
  3. Add 5 drops of an additional essential oil to help promote relaxing such as eucalyptus, lemongrass, peppermint or lavender. The extra essential oil will help mask any of the extra scent from the vinegar or witch hazel.


  1. Tightly screw on the spray bottle top and shake the mixture.
  2. Spray your yoga mat with your new cleaning spray and air dry before use.

Tips:
  • For an extra dirty yoga mat fill the base of your bathtub with the strong yoga mat cleaning spray mixture and place the yoga mat flat at the bottom of the tub within the water. Scrub the mat with a sponge or cloth, and rinse your mat with clean water until the water runs clear. Dry the yoga mat initially using a towel to remove most of the water and allow to fully dry on a drying rack till fully dried which should take between 30 minutes and 2 hours.
  • Routinely clean your yoga mat after each use or few uses with a cleaning spray to help keep your mat clean.
  • If pregnant contact your doctor before using tea tree oil, or read any other essential oil bottle carefully as some oils such as tea tree oil are not advised to be used while pregnant.
