Many variables factor into your cost to insure your vehicles. Some of the cost depends upon your driving and credit history, which insurance companies see as risk indicators by insurance companies. The value of your car, the size and power of its engine, its optional safety features, your hometown and the car's overall loss rate across the United States also contribute to your monthly premium. While these factors make it hard to forecast insurance rates for individual owners of specific cars, owning certain models is certain to cost you more in the insurance department. - With their higher overall value, it should come as no surprise that luxury vehicles cost more to insure than any other type of vehicle. Of those, German manufacturers' cars are among the priciest. Of MSN Money's list of most expensive 2010 car models to insure, nine were German imports, with Porsche's 911 Carrera GT2 topping the list. Three other Porsches, four Mercedes and the BMW M6 round out Germany's hard-to-insure imports, with the Audi R8 the only non-German engineered vehicle on the list.
- Because SUVs are typically larger and weightier vehicles than others on the road, they bring more mass and momentum into an accident, usually causing more damage in the process. While this lifts rates across most SUVs, a few are notably expensive to insure. Land Rover's Range Rover Westminster and the Cadillac Escalade Platinum the most expensive 2010 SUV models to insure, with their luxury price tag certainly adding to insurance costs as well.
- Manufactures are souping up coupes on the factory floor to help entice young drivers looking for a thrill. While added horsepower and sporty handling make for a fun ride, they often contribute to more accidents as well. The Subaru Impreza WRX and Scion tC both boast higher insurance rates because of those traits. The Honda Civic Si, a souped-up sport version of the classic Honda model frequently modified by tuners, also lends itself to a higher accident rate because of its increased likelihood to end up wrapped around a pole.
- Because sedans are typically purchased by older drivers with better driving skills, they boast some of the most competitive insurance rates as a class. Despite that fact, luxury models such as those rolling off the Jaguar, Mercedes and BMW lines, have high premiums tied to their hefty sticker prices.
- With trucks drifting into luxury status while getting larger and more powerful, it's inevitable that a few 2010 models would have high sticker prices. With its massive weight and cab full of options, various makes of Ford's F-350 and F-250 virtually dominated MSN Money's Top 100 most expensive 2010 trucks to insure. The Chevrolet Silverado 3500 and its GMC cousin, the Sierra 3500 also crept into the upper expense brackets, as two of the most expensive non-Ford trucks to insure.
