John & Abigail Adams Scholarship Requirements

    Academic Requirements

    • Applicants for Massachusetts' John and Abigail Adams Scholarship must score in the top 25 percent on the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System English language arts and mathematics test, which they take in the 10th grade. In addition, students need to score in the advanced category on one of the MCAS tests -- either the language arts or mathematics test -- and in the proficient or advanced category on the other test.

    Residency Requirements

    • Applicants have to be permanent legal residents of the state of Massachusetts for at least one year to earn the scholarship. They also must be U.S. citizens. In addition, they need to have graduated from a Massachusetts high school. This scholarship applies only at Massachusetts community colleges or state colleges, meaning students who choose to attend college out of state or at a private Massachusetts institution are not eligible to use the award.

    Financial Requirements

    • Students applying for the John and Abigail Adams Scholarship must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. If they state awards them a scholarship, they have to complete a FAFSA annually throughout their collegiate career. Scholarship recipients are responsible for submitting their scholarship award letter to the college or university's financial aid office where they plan to attend.

    Post-Award Requirements

    • Scholarship recipients have to maintain certain standards throughout their collegiate career in order for the scholarship to renew annually. Recipients must enroll as full-time students in the first fall semester following their high school graduation. They must maintain a 3.0 grade point average, which the school must verify at the end of each academic year. Students also need to complete their degree program in eight semesters.
