DIY Garden Boxes

    Tire Planters

    • 1). Wipe down nine 13-inch tires, eliminating any grime or dust on them. Spray paint them in the color or colors of your choice. You may also embellish them with stencil work if you like. Let your paint job dry overnight to be sure the paint cures. If you need more than one coat, let each coat dry for at least an hour before applying the next.

    • 2). Arrange five tires in a circle, making sure the edges touch. Mix equal amounts mature compost and potting soil. Shovel the mixture into the tires and into the hollow space in the center. Make sure you fill the tires completely, paying attention to the wells on the sides.

    • 3). Stack three more tires on top of the first five, arranging them in a triangle. Fill these with soil also and top your pyramid planter box off with a single tire filled with soil. Plant your plants as desired in the open places in the soil.

    Table Planter

    • 1). Measure the sides of an old rectangular table and add about ½ inch to each of your measurements. Mark and cut your 1-inch-by-4-inch boards according to these measurements. For a table 36 inches long by 24 inches wide, cut your boards 36 ½ inches long and 24 ½ inches wide. Move your saw slowly through the wood to avoid wavy ends.

    • 2). Cut four pieces of 1-inch-by-1-inch boards about 3 inches long. Arrange your wider boards in a rectangular shape, placing the 3-inch pieces in the corners. Drive screws through the ends of the wider boards and into the 3-inch pieces in the corners. You should have about an inch of space on your wider boards above the corner pieces.

    • 3). Flip your rectangular frame over and set it down on your table. The inch of leeway should allow the frame to slide firmly into place. Run a bead of silicone caulk around the inside edges between the walls of your frame and the edge of the table. Let the caulk cure for 24 hours to ensure it becomes waterproof.

    • 4). Lay about ¼ inch each of newspaper and straw in the bottom of your planter and fill the rest with soil. Plant herbs and other small seedlings as desired. You may place this planter indoors or outdoors as you like.
