A typical day for an ER nurse practitioner may involve dealing with several types of patients such as caring for an older patient with a sprained neck to an adolescent with a head tremor from a road accident to a newly born baby delivered on the way to hospital. The variety of patients in an ER means that there is no space for even a single dull moment. However, the ability to communicate effectively with these different types of patients is the basic skill required to be an ER practitioner.

- Prescribing pain medications as and when required for the bruised patients
- Closely monitoring serious & unstable patients and consulting physicians in regard to their changing condition

- Ordering necessary tests and x-rays for victims of head trauma
- Order lab work
- Document medical history
