Wireless Smartphone ECG Enables Large-Scale Screening
Demographic data were limited to age, gender, sport (if athlete), and prior history of cardiac disease, and we did not analyze or compare other clinical characteristics. Populations were samples of convenience and were not randomized. Sample size was not large enough to have high likelihood of detecting participants at high risk for SCD. Healthy young adults also may not be representative of the young adult population on the whole, and may tend to have lower cardiac risk secondary to healthier lifestyle and increased socioeconomic status. Cardiology clinic patients were not randomized, but were taken on the basis of whether the patient was scheduled for a 12-lead ECG on the current visit.
This study used the 2010 revised European Society of Cardiology (ESC) standards for ECG interpretation in the athlete. Although these criteria were developed to limit false positives in athletes, they may have decreased specificity in our other populations.
