How do I Wire a Brake Controller From a Truck to a RV Trailer?
- 1). Cut a 1/2 inch hole in the firewall for the wires to pass through. The firewall is the protective wall between the engine compartment and the interior of the truck. Secure a rubber grommet into the hole so it protects the wires. Place the controller inside the truck and look for a place to mount it on the dash. It should be within easy reach of the driver. Do not mount the controller yet.
- 2). Connect the white wire from the controller to the negative terminal of the truck's battery. Do not ground this wire to the truck's frame.
- 3). Connect the black wire from the controller to the positive side of the truck's battery. Be sure to keep the black wire away from all radio antenna and transmitters. Ten or 12-gauge stranded wire should be used for this connection.
- 4). Attach the red wire from the controller to the side of the stoplight switch that is only activated when the brakes are pressed. This is sometimes referred to as the cold side of the switch.
- 5). Attach the blue wire from the controller to the RV trailer's brakes. Depending on the model of RV trailer, the wire may connect to the cold side of the brake switch.
- 6). Mount the controller to the dash of the truck using the hardware provided with the controller. Some controllers must be leveled prior to installation. To level the controller, hold it up to the place on the dash where it will be installed. Adjust the pendulum until it is level. If the pendulum cannot be adjusted correctly, find a different location for the controller.
