Preparing Our Children to Read

One of the sad realities in our problem filled world is the fact that over 780 million adults are illiterate.
These people cannot do the things that most of us take for granted like reading a daily newspaper, a good novel, a letter from a friend or even a precious note from someone they love.
Their future's are as limited as their ability to read and write and that is tragic.
Even in our own country the numbers of those who can't read and write is abysmal.
This is a disadvantage that we wouldn't wish on anyone, especially children, and yet a startling number of young people are suffering from this same inability.
We all want so much for our children.
We want them to be successful and to be happy and because these things are so closely connected to their abilities and their self-esteem, we want to ensure their literacy.
How do we accomplish that? According to the National Council on Reading one of the first things we can do is to start early because the more exposure a child has to reading the more likely he or she will be to want to learn.
It turns out that not only do all those bedtime stories we read to our children provide wonderful memories of time spent together but they also serve as a foundation for their future education.
It is estimated that a child who is read to from infancy will enter kindergarten much more prepared and with much greater understanding of words and language than a child who has missed this experience.
Another benefit to exposing children to language at an early age is that it expands their whole universe much the same as it does for adults who are avid readers and experience a world of adventure, intrigue or romance, etc.
through books.
The early exposure also seems to extend the attention span of a child which is a factor essential to their ability to learn.
The conclusion is that taking or making the time to read to our children is a gift we can give them that will enrich them throughout their entire lives.
