Minimum Sound Standards for Hybrid and Electric Vehicles
Federal Regulators proposed a minimum sound standard for hybrid and electric vehicles.
The minimum sound standard will make roads safer for pedestrians.
Pedestrians will be able to hear hybrid and electric vehicles as they approach.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, pedestrian and cyclists were more likely to be involved in crashes with Hybrid and Electric vehicles.
Hybrid and Electric vehicles do not rely on traditional gas or diesel powered engines when driven at low speeds.
This makes these vehicles quieter and sometimes harder to hear over regular street noise.
The proposed standard would require that these vehicles be detectable whenever traveling under 18 miles per hour.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, NHTSA believes that when these vehicles are at 18 miles per hour and faster they make enough noise to be heard over traffic.
Car manufacturers will have a wide range of sound choices.
As long as vehicles meet certain minimum requirements, car manufacturers will be able to pick whatever sounds they want.
The public will be able to comment and listen to different sounds on the NHTSA website.
The new regulation will require that the volume and pitch must increase depending on speed.
Hybrid and electric vehicles will also have sounds for when the vehicles are idle and in reserve.
If the proposed rule is approved and finalized, a three year phase will begin in September 2015.
The road can be a dangerous place for pedestrians and cyclists.
It is important to remember attentive while on the street.
Avoid distractions while walking or biking.
Some examples of distractions include listening to music, talking on the phone, and texting while walking.
Pedestrians have right of way, but it is also important for pedestrians to remember safety rules.
Always look both ways before crossing the street.
Pedestrians should also try to make eye contact with the driver to ensure that the driver can see you.
In addition to streets, parking lots can also be very dangerous pedestrians.
Cars generally drive at a slower place in parking lots.
A hybrid or electric vehicle could easily drive undetected in a parking lot.
It is important for pedestrians to remember all street safety rules.
Drivers are often distracted in parking lots.
They are focusing on finding a parking spot, backing out a parking spot, and making sure the lane is clear.
All these distractions make parking lots a dangerous zone for pedestrians.
These proposed sound standards will make roads safer for pedestrians, but it is still important for drivers and pedestrians to remember all safety roads.
We must all use the roads so it is important to focus on our respective activities.
Safety awareness will make roads safer for everyone.
We will be able to decrease the number of car accidents that occur all over Orange County.
