Travelling with Children: The Perils of Public Transport

Selecting the right stroller can be rather difficult, but things just get a lot more troublesome when you realise you'll have to take it when you ride public transportation. Imagine all the things you do so easily when you get on a bus or train. Now imagine how difficult that will be once you have to lug a monstrous stroller with you, bumping against people and seats.

You have to remember that you won't just be traveling with buggies. You'll be traveling with a buggy and a child. The infant who owns that buggy will make things doubly harder, as you now have to make sure that you don't do anything to jeopardise him or her. You need to choose the right buggy, as a mistake could be rather costly, really. Your child's well-being is at stake, and you still need to run your usual errands. This is why you need to know exactly what kind of stroller you need, so that you don't end up with failures on both fronts. A proper buggy should be helpful in keeping your sanity intact as you manoeuvre your way through your everyday life.

In selecting buggies for public transport, there are several factors you have to take note of. First, is it lightweight enough? Weight is a serious issue, as you don't want to have a bulky and heavy stroller to drag you down as you make your way through the city. A lightweight model is perfect for taking on buses and trains so do take note of the weight issue when selecting buggies.

Next, you have to look for smaller and slimmer buggy designs. Again, imagine the usual aisles you have to walk through when you're on a train or a bus. Now, given the narrow aisles, it only makes sense to get a proper buggy that is slim and will fit through these aisles. You don't want a model that will be far too bulky and snag easily when you're on public transport. Check the wheels, too, as sometimes even slim models have wheels that are far apart and therefore easily snag. Just double check to be sure that the model you choose is lightweight and slim. You don't want buggies that are far too bulky for regular use on public transport.

Also, see if your buggy's folding mechanism responds quickly. You should be able to fold or unfold it with one hand, because you'll be juggling a baby and a host of other baby-related items while folding or unfolding the buggy. A lightweight buggy with a reliable folding mechanism is a must-have for any busy parent.

Lastly, check that your buggy folds into a very compact body upon folding. Some public transport systems are rather strict about buggies. In some cases, you're allowed to board even with an unfolded buggy, but in others you'll just have to fold it while riding. This is why you need to choose buggies that are compact and easy to carry around once folded. It's also common courtesy on your part to do what is best for your fellow commuters. Just make sure you have a buggy that is quick to fold or unfold upon command.

It goes without saying that you'll be better off not getting on buses or trains during rush hour, but the point is that you need buggies that will work regardless of the situation you find yourself in.
