What is a Safe Way to Kill Fire Ants?

    • 1). Pour 4 tbsp. mild han dish washing liquid into each of the 1-gallon milk jugs. Fill the remainder of each milk jug with the hottest water possible from the sink. Place the lid on each milk jug and shake well to mix the soapy solution.

Wear boots or shoes to protect your feet from stinging bites, and tuck pant legs into the socks to keep the ants from climbing up your legs.

    • 3). Locate fire ant mounds and nests, and pour the soap solution down the entryway into the nest. Pour the solution down into the nest using as many of the gallon jugs needed until the solution comes up out of the top of the nest and surrounds the mound. The soap in the mixture kills the fire ants.

    • 4). Sprinkle instant grits around the mound a few hours after the soap solution has dried. Any fire ants that were away from the nest at the time of dousing it with soapy water will eat the instant grits, which expand in their stomach and cause them to die.

Fill a spray bottle with lemon juice. Spray around outdoor and indoor living areas such as patios, foundations, doorways and windowsills where fire ants have been seen to repel the ants and prevent them from continuing to invade your space.

    • 6). Repeat Steps 1 through 5 every few days until there are no more signs of fire ants in your yard or near your home. Apply the soapy water solution more frequently when it rains.
