Variations of Plug Plant Trays For Your Seeds

When starting your garden from seed, one of the most important items you will need to begin is a plug plant tray.
These come in a few different varieties, ranging from your basic tray/plug inserts/humidity dome set-up to a more sophisticated self-watering tray combo.
The most popular (and least costly) variety is your basic seed try that comes with a plastic bottom (for collecting water drainage, a plug insert tray (usually housing 48 or 72 plug inserts), and a clear plastic humidity dome.
These seed trays can be bought individually or in tri-packs, and are the most economical way to start your plants from seed.
They require you to purchase soil separately, which is ideal for those who already have soil or who are picky about the soil they use.
If you prefer to use peat pots instead of plastic plug trays, consider purchasing a seed tray with them instead.
These trays usually don't feature as many plug inserts, and the peat pots tend to be larger than their plastic counterparts.
This works well if you plan to grow your plants larger in your seed tray before transplanting them outside, as larger peat pots give them more room to grow.
If you don't want to bother purchasing your own soil, the right choice for you may be the plug plant tray with peat pellets.
All you have to do is drop one pellet in per insert, add water, and watch the pellet expand.
The soil in the pellet is specially formulated to help your seedlings grow.
There's no mess of soil and the trays can be used year after year with replacement pellets readily available at garden centres or nurseries.
The most sophisticated seed-starting systems are self-watering seed trays.
If your thumb is slightly less than green and you're too busy to remember to water then this system is your best bet for getting your plants started from seed.
In addition to the peat pellets or soil cubes included in the intermediate set-up, these also trays include special mats that wick the water from the bottom of the tray and help the soil and seedlings better access moisture between waterings.
Each plug cell is watered evenly in these trays, and many of these systems guarantee you better results than with other seed starters.
These plug plant trays are also reusable, and require less attention than the basic set-ups, necessitating additional water less often than non-self watering varieties.
These systems do cost more, but are more fool-proof.
