How to Fax Forms Used to File Taxes

    • 1). Contact the IRS by phone to arrange to fax your tax forms. The IRS accepts some forms directly without prior arrangement by telephone, including EIN Requests, Power of Attorney forms and Taxpayer Authorization, but most tax forms require prior arrangement.

Individuals should call 800-829-1040 and businesses should use 800-829-4933 to make arrangements.

    • 2). Gather your completed tax forms together. Review the forms before you file to make sure you've included all appropriate documentation and signed your tax forms.

    • 3). Write out a fax cover sheet that includes your name, telephone number and IRS fax number, plus the name of the department or person you are trying to fax (you'll know this information from your phone call).

    • 4). Place the fax cover sheet and the tax documents in your fax machine. Make sure to orient them properly, either face up or face down, depending on your fax machine.

    • 5). Input the IRS fax number then press the "Start" or "Send" button to transmit the fax. Wait while the tax forms scan and fax to ensure that the pages go through one at a time with no problems.

    • 6). Look for the "Receipt" or "Confirmation" button on your fax machine when the machine finishes faxing the documents. Press this button to receive confirmation that your forms were transmitted properly. The IRS does not acknowledge tax forms sent via fax so this is the only way you'll know if the forms went through properly.
