Horse Racing Handicapping When You Don"t Know What to Do

Horse racing handicapping is one of the most situation dependent endeavors a person can undertake. It requires you to be in the moment and to understand what is happening at the track at that moment. The irony is that we use past performances to foretell the future of races that are happening in the present.

So how do you know how to win and which factors are the most important for any given day, time, season? When handicapping horse races, unless you have a photographic memory, you must keep good notes and pay attention. How many people who go to a race track are up in a clubhouse far removed from the actual race course and the paddock?

To pick winners when you are betting on horses you should be looking at the horses, not just the past performances. If you were to ask ten bettors how the horse they bet in the last race looked, probably only about half could give you an accurate description of the horse's condition and look. Was it sweating profusely and over heated? Did it look like it was on the muscle or was it tucked up showing too much rib?

The same may be said for their lack of interest in the jockey. Did the jockey seem uninterested, feet hanging down and just putting in his time as his or her mount plodded out onto the track, or was he or she in the irons, paying attention to the horse? Did the pilot have a look of confidence and anticipation?

All these questions would stump many people and yet, they are important. While you may not be able to pick enough winners to make a living by noting the jockey's body language, it may save you from some losing bets and the more of them you avoid, the greater your chances for making a profit betting on horses.

So if you are stumped and don't know how to pick enough winners to make money on the horses, I suggest you pay attention to the here and now while you also use the past performances to decide who might be a logical contender.
