One Chris Crocker Controversy
Chris Crocker is more than just a person.
He is a new pop culture icon emerging at a time when we are still on the cusp of the Web 2.
0 revolution.
The new generation is riding this wave into an ocean of possibilities.
When I was growing up in the 80's, performers like Prince and Boy George intrigued me with their talent and ability to stretch cultural perceptions of male and female archetypes and stereotypes.
When the 90's rolled around, RuPaul was sashaying through the mainstream with a parade of fabulousness that had me feeling hopeful about the open-minded evolution of our society.
The things RuPaul represented seemed to sink away from the mainstream and into the shadows of indie culture.
I will say though that progressive, edgy shows like 'Six Feet Under,' and 'Queer As Folk' continued to hold a flicker of promise for me, and then they wrapped up their seasons and nothing really came into the scene to replace them.
The Logo channel seems to be generating some pull in the gay community (although the possible cancellation of the series Noah's Arc is not appearing to be doing them any favors).
Many people have not even heard of the Logo network, which causes me to question just how integral they really are in terms of a cultural breakthrough (I am keeping my fingers crossed that Logo gets its shit together and steps into the forefront of the media soon).
The past cannot be resurrected or replayed, so I have chosen to embrace the technological revolution this age is moving into.
I see Chris Crocker instinctively utilizing the tools available to him to market and promote himself in ways most of us do not yet understand.
This is causing jealousy amongst some other queens who believe they have more of a right to recognition than Chris does.
They feel they have more talent than Chris, they have worked harder and a lot longer than Chris, and now suddenly what they believed was coming to them is being dished out on this "crock" of a fame whore instead.
Yes, it is possible that you have more talent, wisdom, and experience behind you than Crocker does.
Chris may just be a lucky kid who has been in the right place at the right time.
He appeals to the new generation who happens to be the most web savvy of us all.
A 19 year old queen will have more subscribers on YouTube and more friends on myspace than a queen my age or older would, because there are a lot more socially active internet users between the ages of 15-21 who have the time and inclination to support their favorite celebrity then there are 29-35 years olds (who have work, family and other responsibilities as priorities to tend to in their lives).
I say, let Chris be the new teen idol for the time being if that is his destiny.
His status does not take away from your talent, nor does it have to take away from your potential opportunities.
We each have our own uniqueness.
A lotus cannot be a rose.
Take or leave my advice, however my two cents say to let him do what comes naturally to him, while you do what works for you.
If fame is your goal, lawd help you, but there is more than enough of that to go around nowadays.
