George O'Malley, played by T.R. Knight, has high hopes when he starts as an intern, but things don't seem to come easy for him. He gets the nickname 007 because he almost killed a patient during his first surgery. George also moves in with Meredith. He has a crush on her, but she doesn't know it.
When Meredith is vulnerable, George sleeps with her, knowing it is the wrong thing to do. When she begins crying in the middle of it, he runs out and moves out.
He doesn't speak to her for a long time.
George meets and begins dating Dr. Callie Torres. She feels like she is competing with George's friends and breaks up with him.
George's father is admitted to the hospital and his family looks to George to decide whether or not to take him off of life support. George leans on Callie and after his father dies, asks her to marry him. They go to Vegas and get married and Izzie is convinced it's a mistake. Sad and drunk, the two sleep together and then George agonizes over his infidelity. He finally tells Callie and they break up.
George and Izzie attempt a relationship, but there is no sexual chemistry between them.
While repeating his intern year, George becomes close with the interns, especially Lexie Grey, and they move in together. George sees her as a good friend, though everyone else sees that she wants more from him.
George is allowed to retake his intern exam and passes, becoming a first year resident. He decides to join the army as a trauma surgeon and enlists.
At a bus stop, he saves a lady from getting hit by a bus, but is hit himself and dragged several feet. They try to save him at the hospital, but he dies from his injuries.
